Central Fire Station
Demolition of the old Clendenin School at 13th and Main began recently, clearing the way for the city’s new Central Fire Station. It is the site of North Little Rock’s first high school built in 1902, shown here in two photo images. That four-story school building, which featured a tall central bell tower, was torn down in 1950, though it didn’t come down until after the newer two-story L-shaped building was built around the older building, shown here in a June 1950 School District publication. The newer Clendenin School – the one just razed — is shown here in a photo image from the 1950s. Known as Clendenin Elementary for most of the period from 1913 to 1971, the school was renamed Argenta Elementary and then renamed Argenta Academy in 1990. The North Little Rock School District closed the building and sold it in 2015.

North Little Rock Community Center
August 30, 2024
The City of North Little Rock continues to make progress with the plans outlined for the half cent sales tax. Plans are in place for renovations of the Main Community Center located at 2700 Willow Street as well as the Sherman Park, Glenview, North Heights and Rose City Community Centers. The Main Community Center is open. Entry to the building is located on the north end of the building, indicated by signage. At this time, the weight room, pickle ball courts and aerobic room (upstairs) are closed until the beginning of October. The City is working around the construction schedule so while it may cause some inconvenience, we know the end result will be worth it. The construction work will be completed in three phases:
- painting the exterior of the building
- renovation of the restrooms and meeting rooms
- painting the different areas of the interior of the building
- replacement of flooring where needed
- refurbishing of both saunas
- removal of some of the damaged, exterior entryway, making the reception area more inviting
When we enter into phases two and three of the renovation, we will inform the public of what activities are closed. We ask for your patience and understanding during the renovation of the Community Center.
