NLR Library System Distributes Free Solar Eclipse Glasses

North Little Rock Public Library System to Distribute Free Solar Eclipse Glasses for 2024 Total Eclipse

North Little Rock, Arkansas – [March 4, 2024] The North Little Rock Public Library System (NLRPLS) is excited to announce that it will be providing free solar eclipse glasses in preparation for the upcoming 2024 Total Eclipse on April 8. The Arkansas State Library has generously donated 22,400 pairs of eclipse glasses to the North Little Rock Public Library System, and these will be available to the public free of charge.

The Arkansas State Library initiative extends beyond North Little Rock, as they are supplying eclipse glasses to all public libraries throughout the state. This collaboration aims to enhance public engagement and promote safe viewing of the celestial event.

Starting in March, residents can visit any North Little Rock Public Library System location to request one free pair of eclipse glasses per immediate family member, while supplies last. The library has three convenient locations:

  1. William F. Laman Public Library – 2801 Orange Street, North Little Rock
  2. Argenta Public Library – 420 Main Street, North Little Rock
  3. The Rover (Mobile Library) – Various neighborhood stops, check calendar for details

“We are grateful for the Arkansas State Library’s generous donation and are thrilled to be able to offer free eclipse glasses to our community for this spectacular event,” said Crystal Gates, Executive Director at the North Little Rock Public Library System.

In preparation for the solar eclipse, the North Little Rock Public Library System is hosting two free family events:

Solar Eclipse Survival Kits: Family Evening

  • Date and Time: Wednesday, April 3, at 4 PM
  • Location: Argenta Library, 420 Main Street, North Little Rock
  • Description: This event includes the proper use of eclipse glasses for kids and adults, along with some to take home. UALR Professor Erin Fehr will give a talk on the old myths surrounding the Total Solar Eclipse. There will be fun crafts for kids.

Eclipse Readiness Night at Laman

  • Date and Time: Thursday, April 4, at 5 PM
  • Location: Laman Library, 2801 Orange Street, North Little Rock
  • Description: Attendees will receive free solar eclipse glasses, learn safe viewing methods, and enjoy a themed story time for the youngest astronomers. Delve into the science behind the phenomenon, test your knowledge with Eclipse Trivia and get creative with Eclipse Oil Pastel pieces in The Studio. Additionally, teens can encounter Big Eclipse Energy in The Loft.
