In North Little Rock, one of the most pressing needs is access to fresh, healthy, and affordable food. The NLR Community Garden Program, funded by local tax dollars, is tackling this challenge head-on. Since its launch in 2009, the program has been dedicated to making nutritious, locally-grown food available to those who need it most, while also helping to reduce obesity and fight food insecurity. Along with improving health, the gardens are transforming the city’s landscape, adding beauty and fostering a sense of community.

What are Community Gardens?

A community garden is any shared space where a group of people come together to grow food, whether it’s through nonprofits, community centers, faith-based organizations, schools, or neighborhood groups. These gardens are managed and driven by passionate volunteers who work to close the gap between food and access, ensuring that fresh, healthy produce is available to all.

What We Offer:

Gardens in our program receive a wide range of support, including free compost, seeds, seedlings, plants, educational resources, hands-on assistance, and promotion through our social media channels. Additionally, existing gardens in the program are eligible to apply for up to $5,000 annually to cover garden-related materials, tools, and other expenses. New gardens are awarded up to $1,500 in their first year to help with infrastructure.

Join Our Program!

If you’re looking to start or maintain a garden within NLR city limits, the NLR Community Garden Program is here to help! You can apply for seasonal funding in the spring or fall to start a new garden or support for an established garden. Our Garden Advisory Committee reviews applications twice a year to award funding. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to make a difference in your community!

Check out the new North Little Rock Community Garden video highlighting the Baring Cross and Dark Hollow Gardens.

The Baring Cross community garden has been transformed over the last year in appearance and popularity. The garden is located near 13th Street and Pike Avenue. Many neighbors pick fresh vegetables weekly from the garden. This year, the garden has produced almost 4,000 pounds of produce that has been distributed to the community. The garden contains six unheated greenhouses, called high tunnels, which extend the growing season. The garden has automated drip irrigation, along with weed suppression techniques in the high tunnels, which allows workers to focus on maintaining and harvesting produce rather than spending hours pulling weeds. Pear, apple, and plum trees as well as four bee hives were added to the garden throughout the year. Members of the nearby ACTS Church have served as great partners by assisting with the distribution of produce directly to homes.

The Dark Hollow Community Garden in North Little Rock is alive and thriving! It has been such a great experience to assist in bringing the garden back to a productive state where it can now benefit nearby residents. The revitalization of the garden did not happened overnight. Many in the Dark Hollow community volunteered their time and hard work to develop the garden into a thriving and producing part of the community! All produce grown is available to anyone in the Dark Hollow community. This fall, peach, apple, and pear trees will be planted behind the raised beds. Everyone in the community is excited and appreciative of the work that has been completed. This garden has had a positive impact on the Dark Hollow Community.

2024 Spring Funding applications for the NLR Community Garden Program are due DECEMBER 15, 2023!

This opportunity is available to communities interested in starting and maintaining a community garden and/or improving an existing garden within @cityofnlr limits. Community groups, faith-based organization, schools, and non-profits may request up to $1,500 (if new) or $5,000 (if returning) for garden materials, tools, and certain other expenses. Joining our program grants you and your garden access to free seeds, plants, soil amendments, and the opportunity to connect and collaborate with fellow gardeners!

We offer seasonal funding opportunities twice a year – once for the fall season, due June 15, and once for the spring season, due December 15. Applications may be submitted at ANY POINT throughout the year, but will only be reviewed following the respective dates. Individual gardens are limited to one (1) funding request annually. Funding approval is dependent on review and approval by both the Garden Advisory Committee (GAC) and City Council.

The application can be found on our web page. Applications must be submitted to both ASawyer@nlr.ar.gov and NLRNeighborhoodServ@nlr.ar.gov .

Please don’t hesitate to contact our staff for additional information!

One of the greatest needs in the North Little Rock community is access to healthy, affordable and nutritious food. The NLR Community Garden Program was established in 2009 in an effort to address food insecurity and simultaneously beautify the City of NLR.

A community garden can be defined as any piece of land gardened collectively by a group of people; including non-profits, community centers, faith-based organizations, and schools. The NLR Community Garden Program supplies gardens with free soil, mulch, compost, seeds, plants, educational and work-day opportunities, highlights accomplishments on social media, and donates excess garden produce to local food banks.

The Community Garden Program encourages new and existing gardens to join our program by applying for our seasonal funding grants! Additional consideration will be given to community gardens that plan to donate excess produce, grow produce year-round and host educational workshops.

Applications are due by June 15th and December 15th every year.
