HAYS SENIOR CENTER TO REOPEN JULY 13 WITH A PHASED APPROACH

On Monday, July 13, the Patrick Henry Hays Senior Citizens Center will reopen to members in a limited capacity. At its June meeting, the North Little Rock Senior Citizens Commission approved a reopening plan that includes a two-week pilot with a capacity limit of 50 members at a time in the 60,000-square foot building.

For the first two weeks, only the Hays Center’s aerobics and lap pools and fitness machines will be available. Until further notice, pool occupancy will be limited to 13 in the aerobics pool and 3 in the lap pool (one person per lane). The walking track will be closed to allow distancing between machines. Group activities and classes will resume on a case-by-case basis after the two-week pilot period depending on capacity and instructor availability.

“We are excited to welcome back our members, many of whom depend on the Hays Center to maintain their health and mobility. We are approaching the first two weeks of our reopening cautiously to ensure all safety precautions can be followed adequately. Once we have that experience under our belts we hope to gradually resume additional activities that our members have grown to love, like crafts, ball sports, and aerobics classes," says Hays Center Director Bernadette Gunn Rhodes.

The Hays Center will follow Arkansas Department of Health guidelines for fitness centers, including member and staff temperature and symptom screenings, physical distancing, and frequent disinfecting. Hand sanitizer will be available throughout the facility. The center is adding Health Guards to its staff to ensure safety guidelines are followed.

In addition, everyone will be required to wear face masks inside the building except when actively exercising. Cloth face masks will be available at the center’s entrance for a $2 suggested donation. Individuals exercising will be required to maintain 12 feet distance from others at all times. Food service, events, and day trips will be suspended until further notice. All those with an active membership at the time of the center’s closing, March 12, 2020, will receive an automatic membership extension for the length of the closure, 124 days.
